What was Their Food?
The Sumerians were the first people to stop hunting and start things like cultivation. There were many inventions the Sumerians contributed to and some of them related to farming. There are many types of Sumerian foods that people still use because of their tradition and culture.
A very frequently used ingredient in Sumerian food is barley, which is something we still use in our food today. The foods that Sumerians use have sides like barley cakes, barley paste, or just plain barley. If you lived during the Sumerian time, you would have barley incorporated into all your meals, if you like it or not. But of course, barley wasn't the only thing that the Sumerians ate. They also had other ingredients, such as wheat or millet.
The farming led to foods such as vegetables, like beans onions, lentils, chickpeas, and garlic, leeks, cucumber, cress, mustard(a spice), green lettuce and many more. So even in 2500 B.C., you had to eat all your vegetables and fruits. This has never changed. The drink was goat's milk, people had eggs for breakfast and there were many meats as well. Pig, wild fowl, deer, goat, chicken and venison were the most famous meats in Sumer. Other kinds of food were many types of fish. There was a lot of water near Sumer so people started fishing.
Archaeologists have discovered over 50 different types of fish written down in clay tablets. The tablets dated back to about 2300 B.C. Fried fish vendors had a great trade going on with the city of Ur. Ur had a very big bazaar that sold food. The fruits included apples, fig, watermelon, grapes, plums, mulberries, dates and peaches. There was honey, cheese, butter and vegetable oil written down in some records. Breads had to be soaked with butter, oil and sesame seeds. Of course farms were sometimes far away from the cities and there had to be some kind of transportation get the food to the cities. This is why the Sumerians built irrigation canals (I call these food tunnels). Sumerian food is a very interesting topic to learn about and I hope you look into it further.
